Many times, wiring only needs to be able to withstand the normal environment that all of us deal with on a daily basis. Slight temperature change, the oxygen content that is in the air we breathe, and the average amount of precipitation that naturally occurs are all that it will come in contact with day in and day out. However, there are certain industries that need wiring to do more. This is where HASTELLOY® C-2000® wire alloy shines among the competition. Though it has the normal characteristics of a Nickel-Chromium-Molybdenum wire, such as resistance to corrosion and the ability to operate at extreme temperatures, the C-2000® can also operate within highly corrosive materials such as acid, chlorides, and other halides. This is because the wire contains a small amount of Copper.HASTELLOY® C-2000® wire retains all of the benefits as other Nickel alloys. This means that it is very easy to form, and can hold up to welding and soldering. The difference is the resistance that it has to the many pitfalls that wiring can face over time. The biggest one is pitting or crevice attack, which can render a wire useless once it starts to happen. Stainless steel often suffers from these two occurrences. Furthermore, it can operate within places where ferric ions and dissolved oxygen are present, two solutions that create a high amount of corrosion in most metals. One industry that requires its wiring to operate in these extreme conditions is chemical processing. It is not uncommon for sulfuric, hydrochloric, and hydrofluoric acids to be utilized in various processing techniques. Therefore, any wiring that could be present within these acids needs to be able to withstand the extreme corrosion that these solutions normally have on most metals. HASTELLOY® C-2000® is the type of wire that is preferred by most in the industry in these situations. Whether it is for springs, fasteners, or even pump and mixer shafts, you can be assured that HASTELLOY® C-2000® can handle the job over the long haul. Furthermore, it also has been tested to maintain its integrity under extreme temperature conditions. This means that using this type of wire leads to less maintenance, and an assurance that it is doing its job every time, every day.
C-2000® is certainly a unique alloy within the 12 corrosion-resistant alloys within the spectrum of HASTELLOY®. Like all of the alloys in the spectrum, Nickel, Chromium, and Molybdenum are the primary metals used to make up the whole. However, each alloy infuses trace amounts of other metals in order to enhance the already amazing properties a normal HASTELLOY® alloy has. With the C-2000®, a simple 1.6% infusion of Copper provides amazing benefits when it comes to resistance to acidic properties, all while maintaining the corrosion resistance that comes with other Nickel alloys.
