When you break down the properties of HASTELLOY® C-22® strip alloy, you will find a Nickel-Chromium-Molybdenim-Tungsten alloy that is extremely versatile and has a very high level of resistance to crevice corrosion, pitting, and stress corrosion cracking. Each element within the metal provides resistance to different forms of corrosion, while the Nickel helps with oxidation, even in environments where oxidation occurs rampantly such as wet chlorine or nitric acid. This resistance is very useful when you are dealing with sea water, where the salt content does a number on most metals.
Another benefit of HASTELLOY® C-22® is its ability to be easily welded. Unlike other alloys that do not take to welding that well, C-22® can be attached to other metals quite easily, making it one of the more versatile alloys in existence. Furthermore, when forging this strip alloy, it is important that it is rapidly cooled after reaching ideal temperature. This can help avoid detrimental phases in the strip itself, and helps maintain the integrity of the alloy. When welding, you can use the gas tungsten arc, the shielded metal arc, or the gas tungsten arc processes, as the alloy will take to any of the three.
HASTELLOY® C-22® is best used in any situation where corrosion is almost unavoidable. This includes when salt water is present, nuclear fuel processing, industrial equipment, and chemical processing. It is extremely important that any type of alloy used for these areas can withstand high levels of corrosion over a long period of time. Without it, maintenance would be required on a daily, or sometimes even more frequent basis, which slows down production to a screeching halt. Many times, equipment using C-22® is used in an area that is not safe for humans to be in over a long period of time. Therefore, maintenance may not be that practical, making it necessary for the alloy to withstand such corrosion levels.
One of the 12 corrosion resistant alloys in the Hastelloy family, HASTELLOY® C-22® is set apart from the rest due to its levels of Vanadium. Vanadium is used to help strengthen metals like steel, aluminum, and titanium. Furthermore, it can help with temperature stability in those metals, allowing them to be used in more extreme applications. It can often be found in things like airframes and high speed jet engines. When added to the Nickel-Chromium-Molybdenum-Tungsten alloy, it greatly enhances the already high levels of corrosion resistance, which is why C-22® is used in the most extreme circumstances of corrosion.
