Elgiloy® Alloy: Past, Present & Future

The Innovation of Elgiloy® alloy

After World War II, the Elgin National Watch Company, predecessor to today’s Elgiloy Specialty Metals, received complaints from returning servicemen that their Elgin watches couldn’t withstand the punishment of corrosive environmental situations in various theaters of war.

After four years of research, “Elgiloy® alloy”, a non-corroding watch spring material with an infinite life span, was born.

With excellent corrosion resistance, very high strength and temperature properties, this non-magnetic cobalt alloy was quickly recognized (in wire and strip form) as a preferred choice in medical device manufacturing, space grade material, aerospace and petrochemical industries, among others, for applications including:

  • Dental Implants
  • Medical Devices
  • Orthodontic Wire
  • Pacemakers
  • Satellite Communications Equipment
  • Seals
  • Semiconductor Components
  • Space Hardware Components
  • Springs
  • Stents
  • Surgical Clips
  • Surgical Implants
  • Torsion Bars
  • Weapons Systems

Trusted When It Counts: Highlighting the Features and Benefits of Elgiloy® alloy

Elgiloy® alloy is a non-magnetic Cobalt-Chromium-Nickel-Molybdenum alloy having a unique combination of very high strength while maintaining excellent formability, ductility, excellent corrosion resistance, and high fatigue strength.  Additional strength increases of up to 25% can be achieved through aging cold reduced material.

Alongside excellent fatigue life and good mechanical properties, Elgiloy® alloy  performs from temperatures ranging from cryogenic up to 850°F (454°C), making it stable for a wide variety of applications and end uses.

A key feature of Elgiloy® alloy is its high resistance in sulfide stress corrosion cracking and pitting environments.  As a result of this, the alloy is often regarded as the alloy of choice in the most demanding sour well environments, and in seawater, Elgiloy® alloy is virtually immune to crevice and stress corrosion and pitting even at the highest strength levels.
