The beauty of Titanium Grade 2 is that it shares many of the same properties as its Grade 1 counterpart, but is moderately stronger at the same time. It presents a high level of corrosion resistance and oxidation. Furthermore, it has a high level of weldability, making it exceptionally versatile. It also shows great cold forming characteristics, allowing it to be used in extreme environments.
Grade 2 Titanium is quite often referred to as the workhorse of the titanium alloy family. This is because of its availability and versatility. When you are choosing which plate alloy to use for a particular job or piece of machinery, you need to know that it can handle any modifications or environments that you plan on using it in. You will not need to worry about this with Titanium Grade 2, as you can shape and mold it in any number of different shapes and sizes.
One industry that makes use of Grade 2 Titanium is aerospace. You can often find Titanium Grade 2 in the shells of airplanes. The outside of an airplane needs to be formed a certain way in order to maximize lift and to keep it aerodynamic. Also, the outside of a plane is exposed to very cold and wet environments, and any failure on the part of the alloy could be catastrophic. You can also find it in machines that have to traverse salt water, or cryogenic areas. Being able to avoid corrosion is the most important property in any alloy that needs to be in salt water, where corrosion can occur rapidly. In cryogenics, some of the coldest temperatures found on the planet are exhibited. Therefore, they need an alloy that can stand up to those conditions. Titanium Grade 2 has no problem with extreme cold, which makes it very useful.
