Description

Hastelloy® alloy C-276 is a Nickel-Molybdenum-Chromium corrosion resistant alloy. The alloy is resistant to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking. Hastelloy® C-276 is hardened only by cold-working. Hastelloy® C-276 can operate from cryogenic temperatures up to 750°F (400°C).

Additional Information Regarding Hastelloy® C-276

When you are building either machinery or a housing unit that has to hold chemicals that are highly corrosive, it is important to not only build it using an alloy that can handle these chemicals, but also wiring that can operate the machinery with equally as resistant properties as the metals that the units are made of. Hastelloy® C276 was one of the first Nickel-Molybdenum-Chromium alloy that was created in order to be able to withstand these environments. With high levels of resistance to stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and crevice corrosion, C-276 is the preferred alloy in industries such as chemical processing.

The chemical processing industry has been utilizing Hastelloy® C-276 for close to fifty years. Weldability was an issue with previous alloys, which meant that engineers were very limited as to how they could build machinery, without having to sacrifice performance. As you can imagine, it is not easy to repair or replace units that have been exposed to corrosive elements, especially if it needs to be treated on a regular or even semi-regular basis. A new alloy had to be created to meet the needs of the people and the industry involved, thus Hastelloy® C276 was created.

Other reason why Hastelloy® C276 is so valuable to the chemical processing industry involves its resistance to oxidizing salts, and ferric and cupric chlorides, even if those solutions are strong. Like other Hastelloy® alloys, the high level of Nickel and Molybdenum means that it shows high levels of corrosion resistance as well as resistance to pitting and stress-corrosion cracking. What sets C-276 apart though, is it is one of the few materials on the market that can withstand chlorine dioxide, wet chlorine gas, and hypochlorite, all extremely corrosive to most alloys out there.

As stated before, wiring is just as important as the metal used to create the machinery and housing units that hold these corrosive compounds. All of these machines require electricity to operate, which means that wiring needs to run through it to work. These wires come in contact with the solutions housed inside, and if they fail due to corrosion, it could lead to catastrophic results. Wiring is not always easy to replace, especially if it is located in a tight or corrosive area that is not feasible for human hands to operate under. Hastelloy® C-276 wire can work under these extreme conditions, alleviating any concern that operators may have that a failure might occur.

While the strip and other variations are easily welded to be able to fit into any design that is needed, the wire version is easily soldered to exhibit the same versatility, provided that it has not already been exposed to corrosive conditions. The wire is heat-treated in extremely hot conditions, 2050 degrees Fahrenheit, and then is quenched rapidly. When you combine this process with the other elements that are already contained within the alloy, it allows the wire to be as versatile as it needs to be, all while performing time and time again in the environment that the chemical processing industry demands it to work under.

Hastelloy® C276 wire can work in any corrosive conditions, such as those found in waste management and pollution control. The waste that is processed in these industries is often extremely toxic and needs an alloy that can withstand the toxicity. This is similarly true for the paper producing industry that uses chemicals to treat their products. There is a good reason why Hastelloy® C-276 has been used for many years by industries that produce some of the most corrosive chemicals found on the planet.
