Description

HASTELLOY® C-276 alloy is a Nickel-Molybdenum-Chromium corrosion resistant alloy. The alloy is resistant to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking. HASTELLOY® C-276 alloy is hardened only by cold-working. HASTELLOY® C-276 alloy can operate from cryogenic temperatures up to 750°F (400°C).

Additional Information Regarding HASTELLOY® C-276 alloy

Another widely used Nickel-Molybdenum-Chromium alloy that is used in several different industries is HASTELLOY® C-276 alloy. Much like its counterparts, HASTELLOY®C-276 alloy displays strong resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice corrosion, and pitting. However, unlike many of its counterparts, HASTELLOY®C-276 alloy is only hardened by cold-working. This allows it to be used under very specific circumstances for the engineers and maintenance mechanics that utilize it.

Discovered close to fifty years ago, HASTELLOY® C-276 alloy has proven over time to be one of the top alloys in the market in terms of chemical corrosion resistance. The chemical processing industry has been using the alloy for years with magnificent results, and continues to use it to this day. It was first manufactured in order to solve problems that other alloys had with welding. Due to its low content of Carbon and Silicon, it is easily weldable to fit in almost any machinery that needs to have high levels of corrosion resistance.

Most nickel alloys are easy to form and weld, and show excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking in a variety of chloride solutions. This is an area that stainless steel fails over and over again. However, with HASTELLOY® C-276 alloy, the levels of Molybdenum and Chromium allow it to maintain its integrity in oxidizing and non-oxidizing acids. Furthermore, when chlorides are present, HASTELLOY®C-276 alloy is able to resist pitting and crevice attack. Lastly, this alloy is extremely stress corrosion cracking resistant in oilfield environments which makes it invaluable in that particular industry.

Chemical processing industries tend to use HASTELLOY® C-276 alloy inside their columns, heat exchangers and reactors, due to the toxicity of the chemicals that are housed and pass through them. Among the many chemicals that HASTELLOY®C-276 alloy can withstand include, a variety of acids, seawater, and chlorine solutions. It also maintains its integrity after it has been welded, so it can be shaped to fit in any area. Versatility is important when it comes to putting together chemical processing units, and the HASTELLOY® C-276 alloy strip absolutely fits that criteria.

Another reason why HASTELLOY® C-276 alloy strip is trusted by the chemical processing industry is the way that it is created. The alloy is heat-treated in temperatures up to 2050 degrees Fahrenheit and is then rapidly quenched. This process, combined with the elements contained inside the alloy, is what allows it to be versatile, while still holding up under extreme conditions. It can be welded using almost all typical welding methods, although it is unadvisable to use certain methods once the alloy has been exposed to corrosive elements.

Chemical processing is not the only industry that utilizes the amazing properties that HASTELLOY® C-276 alloy provides. Pulp and paper production for example is in need of an alloy that can withstand the chemicals used for the treatment of certain types of paper. Another area is pollution control and waste treatment, which, as you can imagine, produces a high level of corrosive chemicals that can wear down any alloy that is not specifically designed to handle it. HASTELLOY® C-276 alloy strip has been proven over a long period of time that it can handle these circumstances, which is why it is the go-to alloy for any industry that utilizes corrosive chemicals on a daily basis.
