Elgiloy® Alloy: Past, Present & Future

The Innovation of Elgiloy® alloy

After World War II, the Elgin National Watch Company, predecessor to today’s Elgiloy Specialty Metals, received complaints from returning servicemen that their Elgin watches couldn’t withstand the punishment of corrosive environmental situations in various theaters of war.

After four years of research, “Elgiloy® alloy”, a non-corroding watch spring material with an infinite life span, was born.

With excellent corrosion resistance, very high strength and temperature properties, this non-magnetic cobalt alloy was quickly recognized (in wire and strip form) as a preferred choice in medical device manufacturing, space grade material, aerospace and petrochemical industries, among others, for applications including:

Trusted When It Counts: Highlighting the Features and Benefits of Elgiloy® alloy

Elgiloy® alloy is a non-magnetic Cobalt-Chromium-Nickel-Molybdenum alloy having a unique combination of very high strength while maintaining excellent formability, ductility, excellent corrosion resistance, and high fatigue strength.  Additional strength increases of up to 25% can be achieved through aging cold reduced material.

Alongside excellent fatigue life and good mechanical properties, Elgiloy® alloy  performs from temperatures ranging from cryogenic up to 850°F (454°C), making it stable for a wide variety of applications and end uses.

A key feature of Elgiloy® alloy is its high resistance in sulfide stress corrosion cracking and pitting environments.  As a result of this, the alloy is often regarded as the alloy of choice in the most demanding sour well environments, and in seawater, Elgiloy® alloy is virtually immune to crevice and stress corrosion and pitting even at the highest strength levels.

In 2022, Elgiloy® alloy celebrated its 75th birthday. This remarkable, non-magnetic cobalt alloy was first introduced as a non-corroding watch spring material with an infinite lifespan, but its use was widely and quickly expanded to include multiple industries and applications demanding high performance, mission-critical results.

In the years since Elgiloy® alloy’s debut, the medical device manufacturing industry is one of the many industries to take advantage of Elgiloy® alloy’s mechanical properties and strengths in wire and strip forms.

With excellent corrosion resistance, very high strength and temperature properties, this non-magnetic cobalt alloy serves as a preferred choice for medical device manufacturers for applications included but not limited to:

What properties make Elgiloy® alloy a good choice for applications in the medical industry?

Due to the non-oxidization properties, cobalt chrome alloys such as Elgiloy® alloy are an optimum choice of metal for medical devices. Elgiloy® alloy is excellent for implantable applications due to its superior strength and corrosion resistance, as well as being biocompatible: not harmful or toxic to living tissue due to its resistance to corrosion from bodily fluids.

In addition, Elgiloy® is used in orthopedic and medical devices because it is non-magnetic and does not interfere with Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).

Elgiloy Alloys in Bi-Polar Plates For Fuel Cells & Electrolyzers

Posted By Kellie Geissler On In Uncategorized | Comments Disabled

Elgiloy Specialty Metals offers high-performance alloys, stainless steel, nickel-based alloys, and titanium for fuel cells and electrolyzers.

What is a Fuel Cell?

Fuel Cells are electromechanical devices designed to generate and store electrical power. Fuel cells are used in a wide variety of applications, including: Trucks, Trains, Battery Backup Systems, Boats, Subs, Cars, and Material Handling Equipment. More recently, fuels cells are available for home heating, cooling and electricity.

How a fuel cell works:

Many fuel cells are fueled by Hydrogen and air, with water as by-product/exhaust. The airflow to create the reaction is usually over wide width anodic and cathodic “bi-polar plates.” Typically,  plates are flat or mildly formed metallics, although some of the low temp PEM fuel cells will use polymers instead of metals. Each type of fuel cell is designed for a specific application and/or operating conditions (for examples, see above).

Typical Varieties Of Fuel Cells Include:

• Alkaline, SOFC (Solid Oxide Fuel Cell)

• Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell (uncommon)

• PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane)

• Phosphoric Acid

Closely related to fuel cells are Electrolyzers. These utilize the same mechanism but work in reverse, harvesting Hydrogen from water.

Grades & Alloys of Fuel Cells:

Fuel cell manufacturers often utilize 300 series stainless steels with 316L as the most common choice. Richer grades of Stainless (309, 310) or nickel-based alloys are specified for fuel cells with higher temperature operating systems, such as SOFC’s and MCFC.

Titanium is common in Electrolyzers.

Combined Metals companies offer all grades and alloy for fuel cells.

Finish & Features:

ESM understands that finish and flatness are critical features for Fuel Cell manufacturers. We precision grind our rolls in-house to ensure the best finish and tension level your strip for optimal flatness. Our alloys are available from .0008″ and widths up to a meter wide. For microcells using narrower widths, we can slit down to .024″ wide.

New at Elgiloy: HAYNES® 233™ alloy & HAYNES® HR-224® alloy

Posted By Kellie Geissler On In Uncategorized | Comments Disabled

Elgiloy Specialty Metals is excited to announce the expansion of our extensive list of mission-critical, high-performance alloys with the addition of two new alloys:

About HAYNES® 233™ alloy

HAYNES® 233™ alloy is a new Ni-Co-Cr-Mo-Al alloy that offers excellent oxidation resistance at temperatures up to 2100°F (1149°C) or higher coupled with superior creep strength – a combination of properties never before achieved in a readily fabricable alloy. The alloy obtains its exceptional oxidation resistance through the formation of a protective alumina layer, while the high creep strength is a result of solid-solution and carbide strengthening. Additionally, for use in intermediate temperature applications the alloy can be age-hardened by heat treatment to produce even greater strength.

Finally, the alloy can be readily fabricated using conventional methods since it exhibits good hot workability, cold formability, and weldability.

Potential applications include:

Industries supplied:

This is the first time this alloy has been produced in light gauge strip product. We expect demand for this alloy to increase and anticipate growth for this alloy as feedstock becomes more available and new applications emerge.

About HAYNES® HR-224® alloy

HAYNES® HR-224® alloy is a wrought Ni–27.5Fe–20Cr–3.8Al alloy with excellent oxidation resistance and improved fabricability and weldability compared to HAYNES® 214® alloy. This alloy achieves superior oxidation resistance through the formation of a tightly adherent alumina protective scale. It exhibits excellent ductility and formability characteristics, with weldability on par with nickel-iron-chromium alloys of substantially lower aluminum contents.

Potential applications include:
