A former watchmaker...
Following World War II, returning servicemen complained that
their Elgin watches couldn't take the punishment of corrosive
environmental situations in various theatres of the war. The
Elgin Watch Company took those complaints to heart, and after
four years of research, "Elgiloy®", a non-corroding watch
spring material with an infinite life span, was born.
But as word of its durability spread outside the watch industry,
the demand for Elgiloy grew...in aerospace, medical devices,
and petrochemical applications. As markets expanded, facilities
were added to keep up with the demand for more wire and strip.
Additional compatible alloys were added to the production
and today Elgiloy produces more than 40 high performance alloys.
Since opening its doors to a small slitting operation just a few
decades ago, Combined Metals of Chicago (CMC) has forged itself
into one of the industry's foremost stainless steel service centers.
Today, CMC provides flat rolled stainless steel strip, sheet, and foil
to more customers than ever before - thanks to its commitment to
quality, short lead times, and reliable delivery.
It's only natural that Elgiloy - an innovator in alloys and CMC -
a leading stainless service center, would combine forces to bring
a new standard of excellence to the metalworking industry.
